“Over the years I’ve been more successful at dealing with love than with jealousy. I get jealousy attacks all the time. I think I may be one of the most jealous people in the world. My right hand is jealous if my left hand is painting a pretty picture. If my left leg is dancing a good step, my right let gets jealous. The left side of my mouth gets jealous when my right side is eating something good. I’m jealous at dinner that somebody else will think of something better to order than I did. I’m jealous of somebody’s blurred Instamatics even when I have my own sharp Polaroid’s of the same scene. Basically, I go crazy when I can’t have first choice on absolutely everything.” (page 49 and 50.)
-This passage of Warhol’s really stood out to me. I have never thought of things quite the way he does so this came to a surprise to me. I have never even considered that one part of your body could be jealous of another. I cant tell if he means this as a metaphor to show just how jealous he is, or if he means it literally. I wouldn’t put it past him if he did.
I have always thought of myself as a jealous or competitive person. But its usually not shown. I like to be the best at something when I put my all in it. I’m an only child so I also like to be the “only”. I’m my mothers only child, my grandparents only grandchild, the only person my boyfriend ever thinks about, my best friends only best friend. I am going to be the only criminal lawyer in the family, the only person with a skydiving license and the only person to back pack Europe for six months. I have all these dreams and aspirations that I want to accomplish and yet when I read this one little passage it makes me look at everything differently. I never realized that I was like this until I read this. “My right hand is jealous if my left hand is painting a pretty picture.” It was put so perfectly.
There is something about Warhol’s words that really make you think. You can’t help but to look at everything in a different perspective. I never thought I would say this but I really enjoy reading a required text!
